Discover a useful checklist for identifying quality out-of-school time programs and activities for school-age youth.
POST does not currently rate or recommend particular out-of-school time programs. However, there are a variety of ways to identify quality programs. High quality programs all have some basic, important characteristics related to human interaction, activities, and health and safety.
The Quality Checklist is a useful tool in distinguishing the strengths and weaknesses of programs. Adapted from the National AfterSchool Association's "Standards At a Glance," this checklist can be printed out and used by families and professionals. Look for programs that demonstrate most of the characteristics listed in the checklist.
Many out-of-school time programs demonstrate a commitment to high quality by becoming licensed or accredited.
In addition, information on the distinct needs of children and youth of different ages can be found in the sections For an Elementary School Student, For a Middle School Student, and For a High School Student.
