Find some advice on what to look for in programs and activities for elementary school students.

A nutritious snack, time to run around, arts, music, drama, reading and writing, and quality time with an adult—all of these are important components of out-of-school time programs for elementary school children. While out-of-school time programs and activities can support academics and complement the school day, they should also offer children opportunities they don't get at school. Out-of-school time programs may be the best place to for children to develop their other talents and be exposed to new activities.

In addition to providing a rich variety of things to do, such programs need to ensure that they offer a safe physical environment with enough room and supervision for participating children.

For elementary school children, parents should look for programs are fun, engaging and different from the school day. In particular, parents should look for programs that:
  • Provide a variety of activities
  • Offer a different set of challenges and skills than those learned in school
  • Separate older and younger children
  • Employ caring and well-trained staff and volunteers
  • Build relationships with families, communities and with schools
  • Make safety a priority
  • Place importance on the relationships between children and program staff
  • Help children build friendships with one another
