Find some advice on what to look for in programs and activities for high school students.
You can try to tell a high school student what to do with her out-of-school time, but it isn't likely to work. High school students have reached an age at which they must be able to make many of their own decisions about how to spend their time.
When school is out, high school students need to be able to choose from a variety of available options. Possibilities include everything from participating in school sports, drama or student government, to developing leaderships skills and volunteering in community service activities.
Through these types of programs and activities, older youth have the chance to acquire new skills, practice decision-making, build relationships with caring adults and peers, and develop a positive vision of their futures. Out-of-school time is prime time to prepare for the challenges of life after high school.
For older youth, parents should work with youth to identify interesting opportunities that support development of the skills that can make for a smooth transition from adolescence into adulthood. In particular, parents and youth should look for programs that: Support youth involvement in leadership and decision-making
- Balance structure with the flexibility
- Offer opportunities to develop genuine "real world" skills
- Provide ways of making contributions to the community
- Structure programs around meaningful projects and products
- Recognize the importance of relationships
- Employ caring and well-trained staff and volunteers
- Look very different from the school day
You can search Programs and Activities to find out what is available for high school youth. We also encourage you to check out News and Publications for more information on youth development and programs for older youth.
