POST Core Training is an introduction to three (3) topics which form an essential foundation for any program serving school-age children and youth: 1.) Child and youth development 2.) Effective group guidance 3.) Safe and healthy program environments.
As an adult who works with young people in our community, your participation in the POST CORE Training will assist you in planning your school-age program/activity and will give you some of the tools that will make your time with young people most effective.
Participants will develop an understanding of child/youth development. Attendees will discuss:
- Concept of whole child, and how developmental domains interact and influence one another
- Ages & Stages within school-aged children and how they differ
- Typical characteristics of children and youth at various ages and stages
- Consideration of uniqueness, results of diverse family experiences, multiple intelligence, differences in timing and ability
- Developmental tasks of developing sense of competence and identity, and
- Importance of peer groups.
- Definitions and general principles of discipline and guidance vs. punishment
- Adult styles of interaction and their effect
- Causes of difficult behaviors, and methods of prevention
- How to establish rules for guiding behavior
- Teaching and facilitating conflict resolution, and
- Positive guidance techniques.
- Policies and procedures for providing a safe, healthy environment
- How we encourage young people to be responsible for safe and healthy habits, and
- Recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect.
